St. Nicholas, Angel and Devil: Costumes for the Czech Mikuláš Tradition
Every year on the evening of December 5, St. Nicholas (Mikuláš) walks the streets of Czech towns together with an angel and a devil. Children recite a poem or sing a song, and in return get sweets and small gifts. Those who misbehaved might get a lump of coal or a potato instead. It’s one of the most loved Czech traditions, full of excitement and a little bit of fear.
Playing St. Nicholas is a big responsibility. You have to play a dignified saint, and you have to look the part. The same goes for the angel and the devil.
Why choose a professional costume
Homemade costumes rarely work. Children know these characters well and spot any detail that doesn’t fit. Making a convincing long white beard and wig at home is close to impossible.
Professional Christmas and St. Nicholas costumes fit well, are made to last and look exactly as children expect. Come to our store together and dress the whole group at once.
H2: Don’t forget the details
- St. Nicholas: a bishop’s robe, a crozier, a long white beard and a white wig. Cotton wool glued to your face just won’t do.
- Angel: a white dress, light wings and a golden or curly wig.
- Devil (čert): a furry costume, horns, a tail and a scary devil mask. The Czech čert is a close cousin of the Alpine Krampus.
