How to Get an Oktoberfest Costume in Prague
Oktoberfest in Munich is the biggest beer festival in the world. Every year, millions of visitors come together to drink beer, eat traditional Bavarian food and have fun in Oktoberfest costumes. Oktoberfest parties have become popular in Prague too, and the right outfit is half the fun.
A short history of Oktoberfest
The first Oktoberfest took place in Munich in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. The celebration was such a success that it was repeated the next year, and it has grown ever since. Today, Oktoberfest starts in late September and ends on the first Sunday in October.
What to wear to Oktoberfest
There are two rules for Oktoberfest: you have to like beer, and you need a traditional Bavarian costume.
- For men: Lederhosen (leather shorts with braces), a checked shirt, white or knee-high socks and a Bavarian hat with a feather.
- For women: a dirndl, the traditional dress with a blouse and an apron, in a short or long version. Finish the look with hair in two braids or a Bavarian braided wig.
